At least seven men and 15 women have died in the massive fire. A pregnant woman is among the dead. Local authorities said that how the fire started is being investigated.
The country’s fire officials said that it is initially believed that the fire was started by a spark from a drone battery used for storage and testing on the first floor of the building. In a matter of moments, the fire spread throughout the building. 29 fire engines and more than 100 workers participated in the firefighting at the scene. After three hours of effort, it was possible to bring the fire under control.
Many workers in the building were outside for lunch when the fire broke out. However, 19 people inside the building escaped by climbing to the roof. Firefighters used emergency ladders to lower them one by one. Some were struggling to breathe due to thick black smoke, but all were rescued alive.
The bodies of the victims in the accident were taken to the police hospital in East Jakarta. The burned building was used as a sales and maintenance office for drone technology provider Terra Drone Indonesia. The company provides drone services to various industries, including construction, mining, oil and gas, energy, agriculture and urban planning.
Police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire. “Suddenly the battery short-circuited and exploded. Some of us on the top floor tried to escape by climbing to the roof,” a witness at the scene told local television.
