Locals are upset over the torture of a leader of the women’s party in Gopalganj
Locals are upset over the torture of a leader of the Kashiani Upazila Women’s Party in Gopalganj. The victims have alleged that she is using her party position to frame people in false cases, threaten them with cases, beat them up and harass them to extort money.
The accused leader is Laiju Begum, the religious affairs secretary of the Kashiani Upazila Women’s Party. She is the daughter of retired army member Shawkat Hossain Sardar of Fukra village. More than a hundred victims, including the BNP leader, have filed a written complaint against Laiju Begum with the district police superintendent.
According to the complaint source, the leader of the women’s party, Laiju Begum, is hiding information about multiple marriages and is ensnaring various people to extort money. It has been alleged that tarnishing the name of the party, framing people in false cases and extorting money by threatening cases has become her profession. The entire Fukra union is angry with her activities. Even local BNP leaders and workers have not been spared from her hands.
Local BNP leader Badrul Alam said, on October 10, Laiju Begum’s ex-husband Apel Mahmud, a resident of Chardaulatpur village in Lohagara upazila, was waiting at my counter at the Fukra bus stand to go to Dhaka. At that time, Laiju suddenly entered the counter and attacked her (ex-husband). At one point, when she wanted to beat her up, I stopped her. Angry, she went to the police station that day and accused me of robbery. After 12 days, she showed the same scene and filed a rape case against me and three others in the court. Laiju exchanged money by making false cases and allegations against different people. Chanchal Molya, a van driver from Fukra village, said, two months ago, Laiju asked me to deliver a dress to her house from Fukra market. Since the van did not go to her house, I delivered it on the road. She asked me to pick it up from the road. When I refused to deliver the dress to her house due to illness, Laiju herself broke the dress while carrying it. Then he demanded 4,000 taka from me and threatened to call RAB and the police. At one point, he falsely accused me of ‘touching my body’ and said, ‘If you don’t give me money, then why are you touching my body?’ Even though he is my daughter’s age. Later, I was saved by paying 2000 taka for fear of honor and dignity.
Sajjadul Islam Rana, a resident of Dhalgram, said, a week ago, Laiju called me on my mobile phone from an unknown number and called me to the market. There I was attacked and my motorcycle keys were taken away. At one point, he threatened to file a case against me. Laiju files cases against people and extorts money. He should be expelled from the party.
Shah Alam, a computer trader from Fukra Bazar, said, ‘Putting people in danger and extorting money has become his addiction. However, I think he is mentally ill. His activities are defaming the area and the party.
A young man named Liton Sardar said, Laiju has filed a false rape case against me. Now she is demanding a huge amount of money through people by talking about compromise. If I give her money, she will withdraw the case. We, the residents of Fukra Union, want to be saved from this woman.
Although we called the accused Laiju Begum’s mobile phone several times regarding these allegations, she did not answer and could not be reached for comment. In this regard, Kashiani Upazila Mohila Dal President Sheela Begum said, I have received a written complaint. I will investigate and take organizational action.
