Local government elections will no longer be held on party symbols
Local government elections will no longer be held on party symbols, said Professor Dr. Tofail Ahmed, head of the Local Government Reforms Commission. He said this at a meeting on local government reform held at the conference room of Singair Upazila Parishad in Manikganj on Tuesday.
Dr. Tofail Ahmed said, “We have exchanged views with our stakeholders and taken their suggestions. According to the suggestions of the stakeholders, there will be positive changes in all areas. Local level elections will no longer be held on party symbols like in the past.”
He said that various issues including law, structure and service activities will be proposed in local government reform.
Other speakers at the meeting said that the previous government had broken the election system by partyizing local level elections, allocating party symbols and stealing votes, thereby making party candidates win. This situation must be overcome. Fair elections must be organized.
Manikganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr. The meeting, chaired by Manowar Hossain Mollah, was addressed by the district’s Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Wares, Singair Upazila Executive Officer Md. Kamrul Hasan Sohag and members of the Election Commission. Former local-level public representatives, political party members and 103 representatives of various classes and professions were also present.
