Late-night robbery on train disguised as passengers, 2 arrested
An armed robbery took place late at night on the Haor Express train plying on the Dhaka-Mohanganj route. At that time, the passengers counterattacked and caught the two robbers and handed them over to the railway police outpost.
It is learned that the train left Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station for Mohanganj at 10 pm yesterday (January 7). Later, after the train stopped at Mymensingh Railway Junction and left for Mohanganj, armed members of the robbers in disguise boarded the ‘J’ compartment of the train. Later, the robbers started looting goods from the passengers on the moving train by threatening them with weapons.
Eyewitnesses in the compartment, Ratan Mia of Tetulia in Mohanganj upazila, Sarwar Mia of Khaliajuri and Anoy Biswa Sharma of Barhatta, have alleged that the robbers took us hostage and looted gold ornaments, mobile phones, wallets, cash etc. at gunpoint. During the robbery, some of us suddenly attacked the robbers and caught two of them. At that time, other members of the robber gang jumped off the train near the outer signal of Gouripur station and fled.
The arrested robbers are – Azmail Hossain Nijhum (30), son of Alamgir Hossain of Kewatkhali area of Mymensingh and Md. Mehedi Hasan Tanvir (18), son of Md. Ruman Mia of Kewatkhali area of Balashpur. Later, they were handed over to the Mohanganj Railway Police outpost.
In this regard, Mobarak Hossain, in-charge of the Mohanganj Railway Police Outpost, told us on Thursday that two members of the robber gang, Nijhum and Tanvir, have been arrested and sent to the Mymensingh Railway Police. Two large steel knives and two mobile phones have been seized from them.
