Landslides in Indonesia, death toll nears 80
All 80 people missing in Indonesia’s landslides are believed to have died. Six more bodies were recovered on Sunday (January 25). The British news agency Reuters reported this information yesterday in a report.
With this, the death toll in the landslide in Java province has risen to 16. Rescue efforts are not progressing due to a lack of heavy equipment. In addition, rescue efforts are being hampered by heavy rains, thick mud and damaged roads.
Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency has deployed about 250 trained rescue workers, including drones and trained dogs. Volunteers have also joined in.
Due to continuous rains and flooding, a massive landslide hit the western part of Java province early on Saturday (January 24). A village was completely buried by the landslide. Residents have been asked to stay away from landslide-hit areas for fear of another disaster.
