Lakshmipur: 10 injured in clash with police over Section 144
10 people were injured in a clash with police in Lakshmipur during a protest march by the anti-discrimination student movement in violation of Section 144.
The incident took place in front of the city’s Chawkbazar Mosque around 5:30 pm on Sunday (April 5). At least 10 people, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Model Police Station Wahid Parvez and the organizer of the anti-discrimination student movement Saiful Islam Murad, were injured in the incident.
It is learned that an argument and clash took place on Hospital Road in the city on Saturday (April 4) night between Habibur Rahman Fahim, an activist of the anti-discrimination student movement, and Akbar Hossain Munna, the publicity secretary of the district Chhatra Dal. In protest, both sides announced counter-programmes in the Chawkbazar area this afternoon. To bring the situation under control, the upazila administration has imposed Section 144 in the city for an indefinite period from 4:30 pm.
A massive clash with the police broke out when leaders and activists of the anti-discrimination student movement took out a procession in violation of Section 144. At the same time, leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal also marched under the banner of ‘July Fighters’. Additional Superintendent of Police Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi confirmed the incident and said that additional police have been deployed to control the situation. No one has been arrested in the incident so far.
