Krishak Dal general secretary Shahidul jailed for obstructing government work
The court has ordered to send Nationalist Farmers’ Party General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul, who was convicted in the 2017 Paltan Police Station sabotage case on charges of obstruction of government work and illegal assembly, to jail. After the hearing on Monday (August 18), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Saifuzzaman rejected his bail and ordered to send him to jail. In the morning, Shahidul Islam Babul surrendered to the court on the condition of appealing in the case and sought bail through his lawyer Nihar Hossain Farooq. In 2023, Shahidul was sentenced to three and a half years under two separate sections of the Penal Code in this case. The defense lawyer said that they will appeal against this order in the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court. He expects to get justice there. On November 23, 2023, Shahidul Islam Babul was sentenced to two and a half years of rigorous imprisonment in one section and a fine of two thousand taka, and seven days in prison in default. In another section, he was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment, a fine of two thousand taka, and seven days in prison in default. According to the details of the case, on October 31, 2017, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s visit to Cox’s Bazar and on her way to Gulshan, party leaders and activists raised anti-government slogans in the Paltan area. They tried to block the VIP road and vandalize it. Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, Sub-Inspector of Paltan Model Police Station, filed the case in that incident. After the investigation, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Ataur Rahman of the same police station, submitted the charge sheet to the court on July 19, 2019.
