Kotwali-Bakaliya residents want Shamsul Alam as their MP candidate

Bakaliya is a relatively large settlement of the local people of Chittagong city. Bakalia is known as the base of BNP in Chittagong. The fate of the Chittagong-9 (Kotwali-Bakaliya) constituency, an important constituency of Chittagong city, is decided by the votes of Bakalia. However, in recent times, due to the multifaceted division and area-based grouping of BNP, the people here have been panicked. As a result, the name of BNP leader Shamsul Alam, who is above the division and grouping, is emerging as a possible candidate for this constituency in the next elections. He is the son of Bakalia.
Shamsul Alam, a member of the BNP Central Executive Committee, contested from the Chittagong-9 constituency in the 2008 elections and lost to Awami League’s Nurul Islam BSC by a narrow margin of votes. Shamsul Alam and his family had to pay a high price due to the competition in that election. Shamsul Alam and his children had to go to jail repeatedly. Even the previous government’s various harassing activities against the family business Messrs. Elias Brothers (MEB) have put this charitable family in extreme trouble. Shamsul Alam has also served as the president of Baklia Thana BNP for a long time.
In the Baklia area, four people have been killed in bloody clashes between BNP and multiple groups of the same ideology in the last less than a year. The killings are based on establishing dominance in the area for extortion.
Apart from politician, businessman and philanthropist Shamsul Alam, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, former convener of Chittagong South District BNP Abu Sufian and former general secretary of Chittagong Metropolitan BNP Abul Hashem Bakkar have been included in the list of possible candidates for this seat. A top BNP source said that acting chairman Tarique Rahman wants Dr. Shahadat Hossain to remain as mayor for the time being. Abu Sufian became controversial after being involved in the incident of removing vehicles of the controversial industrial group S Alam Group on August 5 and losing the post of convener of the South District. Abdul Monaf, a resident of Baklia area, was asked who he wanted as the MP candidate. His straightforward answer was – Shamsul Alam Bhai of our Elias Brothers. This family has already made great progress in Baklia and the entire Kotwali constituency. When someone is sick, they still rush to Shamsul Alam’s house, even if they cannot get their daughter married, Shamsul Alam is our umbrella in any danger. If a person like him enters the parliament, our long-standing dream will be fulfilled. The face of Baklia will change.
Chittagong Metropolitan BNP Joint Convener Shawkat Azam called Khawaja Shamsul Alam a worthy candidate for the Chittagong-9 constituency and said that he is the only local candidate, a person from Baklia. He has worked for the people of the area like his family. He was a victim of attacks and cases during the fascist government. If a qualified candidate like him is nominated, the party can definitely win.
Faridul Alam, convener of West Baklia Ward 19 BNP, said, Shamsul Alam is a candidate with a clean image among the BNP candidates. BNP will benefit if he is nominated as a dedicated leader of the party.
Ali Azgar, member secretary of East Baklia Ward, said, Shamsul Alam is the most qualified among those whose names are being heard in Chittagong-9 constituency. He is not only a BNP leader; his family is known all over the country. He contested from this constituency in 2008 as well. If popular BNP leader Shamsul Alam is elected, the people of the area will get more services.
Shamsul Alam said, it was my crime to do BNP politics and vote for the sake of rice. Because of this, the previous Awami fascist government destroyed our business and commerce. My family was harassed inhumanly. Our business and commerce have almost stopped due to obstacles in the way of positions. Even then, I did not leave the party. Now I am waiting for the party’s evaluation. If the party evaluates me, God willing, I will be able to gift this seat. Our goal is to ensure the welfare of the common people.
