Khaleda Zia leaves for London for advanced treatment
After many ups and downs, former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has finally set off for the UK for advanced treatment. Shamsuddin Didar, a member of the Chairperson’s media cell, confirmed that the ‘special air ambulance plane’ sent by the Emir of Qatar took off for the UK from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 11:46 pm last night with the BNP Chairperson. BNP Chairperson’s personal physician Professor AZM Zahid Hossain said, “I seek prayers for Madam from the countrymen through you.”
The Dhaka airport and surrounding areas were covered with security blankets on the occasion of Khaleda Zia’s foreign trip. Lakhs of leaders and activists, including ordinary people, lined both sides of the road from Gulshan to the airport to bid farewell to the former Prime Minister. Party leaders and activists stood on both sides of Gulshan, Banani and Airport roads and waved goodbye to their beloved leader. The presence of ordinary people was also noticeable at this time. Many were seen getting emotional. 15 people, including six doctors, nurses and personal officials, accompanied Khaleda Zia on this trip in the Qatar Air Ambulance with special facilities sent by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Four royal doctors of Qatar are with her.
After a stopover in Doha on the way, the air ambulance is scheduled to land at Heathrow Airport in the UK at 10 am Bangladesh time today, Wednesday. There, the eldest son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, will welcome his mother Khaleda Zia with his wife and children. Through this, the mother and son are meeting after a long 7 years. Their long wait is going to end. The family of martyred President Ziaur Rahman is waiting for a reunion. After reaching Heathrow International Airport, Khaleda Zia will be directly admitted to the London Clinic.
If the doctors at the London Clinic recommend it, Khaleda Zia will be taken to Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Maryland, USA. However, the doctors could not provide any information about when Khaleda Zia will be able to return to the country after the treatment. Due to this, there is a kind of worry, along with ‘relief’, inside and outside the party about her going abroad. However, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia is scheduled to return to the country after performing Umrah after the treatment. 79-year-old Khaleda Zia has been suffering from various health complications including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and kidney problems for a long time.
Party sources said that four Qatari doctors and paramedics are also in the special air ambulance sent by the Emir of Qatar. 15 people, including doctors and personal staff, have accompanied Khaleda Zia from Bangladesh. They are Syeda Sharmili Rahman, wife of her youngest son, the late Arafat Rahman Koko, BNP Standing Committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Dr. Mohammad Enamul Haque Chowdhury, party executive committee member Tabith Awal, personal physician Fakhruddin Mohammad Siddiqui, Md. Earlier, when Tarique Rahman went to the UK on July 15, 2017 for follow-up treatment of his eyes and feet, he himself drove his mother Khaleda Zia to his home. This incident was positively discussed in the political arena at that time.
Lakhs of people flock to bid farewell: People flocked to the streets to bid farewell to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and get a glimpse of her. Along with leaders and supporters of BNP and its affiliated organizations, leaders of like-minded parties also rushed to Firoza’s Gulshan residence. Security was tightened on the road in front of the house. At 4 pm, a huge crowd of people was seen in front of the residence and the surrounding area. At that time, a BNP worker named Mahmudur Rahman, who came from Brahmanbaria, said emotionally, “I have come to see Begum Khaleda Zia. Begum Zia is an emotion for the people of the country. After so much torture and persecution, Khaleda Zia went abroad for treatment with her head held high. How honorable is the Emir of Qatar to send an air ambulance. But where are those who disrespected her today? Khaleda Zia is the last refuge and beacon of inspiration for a nation seeking democracy and freedom. Mahmudur Rahman hopes that she will recover soon and return to Bangladesh.
