Kamrul Islam on 4-day remand
A court has given former food minister, Awami League presidium member and former member of parliament from Dhaka-2 constituency Advocate Kamrul Islam a 4-day remand in two separate cases of Kamrangirchar Police Station in the capital. The order was given by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain on Wednesday.
Earlier, police produced Kamrul Islam before the court from jail this morning. Later, two investigation officers of the case, Kamrangirchar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Zahid Hasan and Palash Chandra Das applied for his remand for 10 days and 20 days each.
At that time, the accused’s lawyer applied for bail along with cancellation of the remand. PP Omar Faruk Faruki strongly demanded remand. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the accused’s bail application and ordered a 4-day remand for 2 days and 4 days in the two cases.
The complaint said Kamrul Islam demanded Tk 1 crore ransom from the plaintiff, Sagir Ahmed Sujan, for saving his house from vandalism. Sagir Ahmed gave him Tk 2 million through someone. When he refused to pay the remaining amount of the ransom, the other defendants in the case entered the plaintiff’s house on September 24 last year, vandalized and looted the property, on Kamrul’s order.
In this case, Sagir Ahmed filed a case with the court on September 4, naming 14 people, including former Food Minister Kamrul Islam and former mayor Fazle Noor Tapash, along with 150 others as unnamed defendants.
Another case was filed against Kamrul with Kamrangirchar Police Station accusing him of extorting Tk 10 lakh. It was filed by one Ali Ahmed. He went to the court on September 4 to file the case. After that, the court ordered the Kamrangirchar Police Station to accept the case as a complaint.
Besides former Food Minister Kamrul Islam, 25 unnamed people have been made accused in the case.
Incidentally, on November 18, the capital’s Uttara Sector-12, the accused Kamrul Islam was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB). Afterwards, he was remanded several times.
