Joe Biden is getting Germany’s highest honor
President Joe Biden is likely to make his last visit to Germany before the upcoming US presidential election. He will be awarded the highest German honor during this visit.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will award the US President the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit. This information is known from a report of the German press Deutsche Val.
Usually, heads of state are awarded this honor by Germany. Before Biden, senior Bush, George HW Bush received this honor as US President.
The German president’s office told the media that Berlin wants to recognize the German-US friendship and transatlantic alliance under Biden.
Earlier, Bush senior was given the honor for his contribution to the unification of Germany after the Cold War. Helmut Kohl was the chancellor of Germany at that time.
US diplomat Michael Carpenter told DW that Biden’s visit to Germany is very important from a geopolitical point of view. In this visit, Biden will discuss the security of Europe as a whole in the context of the war in Ukraine. Both Germany and the United States have given, and are doing, huge amounts of aid to Ukraine.
