Jessore viral video of ‘armed’ students: Merely performance, not related to militancy.

A video from Jessore Jamia Islamia Madrasa has gone viral, causing widespread uproar on social media. The video shows a man giving a speech in Arabic with his face covered, flanked by two others dressed in black, their faces also covered, and holding what appear to be weapons.

The madrasa’s principal and education secretary clarified that the video is from a cultural program during the institution’s annual Anjuman (competition program), where students performed a skit portraying the struggle of the Palestinian people.

Jessore Jamia Islamia Madrasa, located in the Rajarhat Bihari Colony of Jessore, is a Qawmi Madrasa established in 2012. It offers degrees in Hifz, Maulana, and Mufti programs to approximately 500 students.

Speaking about the incident, Education Secretary Makfur Rahman explained:
“Every year, we organize an annual competition for our students. They perform speeches, recite Hamd, Naat, and Ghazals, and also act. This particular performance, held on December 17, was meant to depict the freedom struggle of the Palestinian people. The weapons used were simply props made from wood and other materials.”

Principal Mufti Lutfur Rahman Farooqui added:
“This was part of the talent development activities we hold during the Anjuman. It was not done with any malicious intent. The students were rewarded for their participation.”

Jashore Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Razzak commented:
“We have reviewed the video. It appears to be part of a madrasa competition where students used dummy weapons for the performance.”

While the madrasa insists the performance was innocent and educational, the video has sparked a heated discussion online, drawing attention to the content and context of such programs.
