Japan earthquake sets houses on fire, at least 30 injured
A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Aomori prefecture on Monday night (December 8), causing widespread damage. The earthquake set several houses on fire and sent thousands of people fleeing their homes in panic.
According to the BBC, a tsunami warning was initially issued but later lifted after reviewing the situation. At least 30 people were injured in the earthquake, although the death toll is expected to rise.
The Aomori administration said that about 2,700 homes were without power due to the earthquake. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was about 80 kilometers from the coast and about 50 kilometers underground.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanai Takaichi warned affected residents, “There may be another earthquake, so keep essential furniture in safe places and be prepared to evacuate quickly if necessary.” Experts say there is a risk of strong aftershocks in the week following the main earthquake, which could cause further damage.
