Jamiat demands punishment for those responsible for the death threats against Dr. Sarwar and Asif Mahtab
Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh has expressed deep concern over the public death threats against researcher Dr. Mohammad Sarwar Hossain and writer Asif Mahtab Uts and has strongly condemned it and demanded exemplary punishment. In a statement sent to the media on Monday (August 18), Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh President Maulana Ubaidullah Faruk and Secretary General Maulana Manjurul Islam Afendi strongly condemned and protested against the incident. The leaders said that Safwan Chowdhury Rebil, a homosexual who is involved in activities against social and religious values, is not only involved in propaganda against religion, society and the state, but is also trying to destabilize the law and order situation in the country by directly threatening to kill him. The leaders also said that Dr. Mohammad Sarwar Hossain is a well-known name in the thinking society of Bangladesh as a researcher, writer and educator. He has written many books and research papers, which contain analysis on religious consciousness, nationality, history and contemporary world politics. Asif Mahtab Uts is already known nationwide as a talented writer, social analyst and speaker of the young generation. His writings and speeches reveal a realistic perspective against Islamic ideals, social values, nationalism and cultural aggression. He continues to play an important role in creating awareness among the youth. The leaders said that both Dr. Sarwar and Asif Mahtab are pioneers in creating public awareness against anti-religious and anti-social attempts, especially Western culture and distorted thoughts and ideas. Therefore, the threat against them is not only an attack on individuals, but also on freedom of thought. They strongly demanded that the government immediately arrest Safwan Chowdhury Rebil and ensure exemplary punishment against him, so that no one dares to show such audacity in the future.
