Jamaat was on Pakistan’s side during the Liberation War

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that the party had to be for Pakistan because Jamaat members were not given the opportunity to go to India in 1971.

Not only Jamaat, but all those who could not go to India in 1971 were for one Pakistan. He said that like BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami does not want the Awami League to be banned at present. He said this in response to questions from journalists at a Meet the Press event at a local restaurant in East London on Tuesday.

Explaining Jamaat-e-Islami’s position in the Liberation War, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, “If India had given everyone the opportunity to go, then everyone would have been united, there would have been no division among the nation. Naturally, many people were helplessly stranded in Bangladesh because India did not give that opportunity. Just as Sheikh Mujib Saheb had nothing to do, he was taken prisoner by Pakistan, similarly we (Jamaat-e-Islami) had nothing to do. We stayed here (in East Pakistan). What will we do?”

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that at that time, Jamaat-e-Islami had two options: to fight against the Pakistan army from within the country or to support it. No political party had the opportunity to do anything in between. Not only Jamaat, but all those who could not go to India in 1971 were in favor of one Pakistan.

The Ameer of Jamaat said that those who said that the country had not developed were wrong. The country had developed. However, there was an opportunity for more development. We never had national unity. Regarding the comment made by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus in a recent interview that the term of the interim government could be four years, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that if it were four years, it would be more. He also said that militancy is not only a problem in Bangladesh but also a problem all over the world. We have to unite and confront militancy.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that just as BNP does not want the Awami League to be banned at present, we also do not demand that the Awami League be banned. But the Awami League banned itself twice.
