A Jamaat leader has been accused of forcibly evicting the principal of a private educational institution Comilla City College and occupying the college. He is the vice-president of Bangladesh Adarsh Shiksha Federation Comilla Metropolitan an affiliate of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The incident took place on Monday afternoon at the college located in Kotbari area of Comilla.

The night after the incident a CCTV video footage went viral on social media sparking discussion and criticism. It shows Jamaat leader Iftekhar Alam and a few others entering the room of college principal Nazmul Hasan Chowdhury. Later they abused the principal in foul language and threatened to leave the college. At one point they behaved aggressively and threw him (the principal) out of the room.

Meanwhile Principal Nazmul Hasan alleging an attempted attack said that when a group of 5-6 people including Jamaat-e-Islami leader Iftekhar Alam his brother Kausar Alam Bhuiyan Ruposhi Bangla College’s accounting department lecturer Manjil Hossain and the same college’s accountant Farhad Hossain tried to occupy the college the college gatekeepers on duty did not open the college gate at first.

Later when the police were informed they came to the spot and Iftekhar entered the college with their help. After the police left the scene saying that the college had its own problems he (Iftekhar) entered the room and started various attempts to occupy the college. When he (the principal) did not obey Iftekhar’s orders at one point in the argument he raised his hand to slap him several times abused him and threw him out of the room.

Comilla City College Management Committee Secretary Selim Reza said that Iftekhar Alam has been exerting political influence since August 5 last year. Earlier in 2013 he was expelled from Comilla City College on various charges. Also he and several members including Advocate Arifuzzaman filed a case against Iftekhar Alam in the Comilla court on charges of theft.

When the case reached the High Court Iftekhar surrendered to the college authorities and was given Tk 33 lakh on the condition that if he returned his share money he would not claim the college membership. But now Iftekhar is repeatedly trying to seize it through political influence alleging that he was forcibly removed from the college membership during the Awami League era.

“The college established in 2008 was taken away from us on the orders of former MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar after the (ousted) Awami League government came to power” said lawyer Kausar Ahmed president of the ad hoc committee of Comilla City College. After August 5 I wrote a letter to the college’s chief regulatory body. After an investigation an ad hoc committee was formed and I was made the president.”
