Jamaat leader killed by Chhatra League leader, Chhatra Dal protests in protest

A leader of the banned organization Chhatra League has been accused of stabbing a Jamaat leader to death in Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila. The incident took place at around 8 pm last Monday (September 29) in Notun Mahal Bazar of Chaufaldandi Union of the upazila.
The deceased Jamaat leader’s name is Amjad Hossain (25). He was a Quran reciter and the editor of a unit of Jamaat’s youth department. The deceased Amjad is the son of the late Nurul Kabir of the area.
Family members said that Amjad had been in Saudi Arabia for a long time. He recently returned to the country and became active in Jamaat’s youth department. He was supposed to get married soon.
The killer Chhatra League leader’s name is Rafi. He is the ward president of the banned Chhatra League and the son of Syed Noor of the same area.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, Rafi and his associates attacked Amjad over a land dispute and lawsuit. Rafi and two other youths attacked Amjad openly with sharp weapons in Notun Mahal Bazar. He suffered two serious injuries in the stomach and one in the back. He died on the way to Eidgaon Hospital when locals rescued him.
Saddam Hossain, the elder brother of the deceased and the joint convener of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Chhatra Dal, said, “My brother Amjad was brutally killed by Chhatra League gunmen identified due to past enmity. I want justice and the execution of the murderers.”
Azizur Rahman, secretary of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Jamaat, alleged that Rafi and his family had been occupying land in the area and filing cases by using the influence of Awami League politics. This murder is a continuation of this.
Meanwhile, as Saddam Hossain, the elder brother of the deceased Amjad, was a Chhatra Dal leader, leaders and activists of the district Chhatra Dal, BNP and its affiliates protested in Cox’s Bazar town at night in protest of the murder. Top leaders of Chhatra Dal also participated in the protest. From there, a demand was made to arrest the murderers within 24 hours.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station OC Ilyas Khan told us that the body has been handed over to the family after receiving the autopsy report. No case has been filed yet. However, a UP member named Ehsan involved in the incident has been arrested. A drive is underway to arrest others.
