It is not possible to give a symbol that is not in the list in any way: EC Anwarul
Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar has commented that the Election Commission (EC) has no scope to do anything outside its legal powers and rules.
He said, ‘According to the rules of symbol allocation, candidates have to be allocated symbols from among those listed. According to the law, it is not possible to give a symbol that is not in our list in any way. The Election Commission cannot take any decision outside the law.’
He said this while talking to journalists after a training workshop organized at Sylhet Police Lines at 10 am today, Sunday (October 19) to enhance the efficiency of the police to carry out election duties properly.
Anwarul Islam said, according to the rules of symbol allocation, a symbol has to be given from those symbols. The Election Commission is a constitutional institution, so it works legally. The Election Commission does not do anything outside the law. According to the law, the Election Commission (NCP) is not able to give the symbol it wants.
He further said, “There has been no move or incident to prevent the elections from being held in February. Many things have come out in the media. This will not have any impact on the elections. We hope the elections will be held before Ramadan.”
Responding to a question on whether the elections will be held through the conventional process or through the PR method, the Election Commissioner said, “It is a matter of political decision. I will not comment on this. Politicians will decide on this. The job of the Election Commission is to organize fair elections. We will do this with the cooperation of the government and the people.”
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury, PPM, Additional Police Commissioner Md. Masud Rana, PPM (Services), Sylhet District Superintendent of Police Md. Mahbubur Rahman and CTSB (DC) Afzal Hossain were present at the function.
