Istanbul mayor arrested, huge protests in Turkey

The arrest of Erdogan’s opposition leader and Istanbul mayor has sparked a furore in Turkey. Protests have spread to other cities, including the capital. Mayor Imamoglu’s wife has joined the protests. She claims that Erdogan will not be able to stay in power for much longer.

Recently, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested on corruption charges. First, he was detained. Later, he was arrested and taken to court. He was taken to Marmara Prison on the court’s order. Protests began in Istanbul after Imamoglu’s arrest. Thousands of people took to the streets. They have been occupying the streets and demonstrating for the past five days.

Imamoglu’s wife Dilek Kaya Imamoglu joined the protest yesterday, Sunday. She told thousands of people, “Erdogan’s time is over. This time he will lose.”

She said that Ekrem was arrested unjustly. The people of the country are being treated unfairly, unjustly. Erdogan must take responsibility for this.

Ekrem İmamoğlu is a staunch opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He was fighting against Erdoğan as mayor in Istanbul. Allegedly, he was unjustly imprisoned for that reason.

İmamoğlu’s supporters organized a symbolic vote across the country. They set up ballot boxes in various cities. It is claimed that people who are not supporters of the opposition CHP were also invited to participate in the symbolic vote. The CHP said that about 15 million people participated in the vote. In some areas, the crowd was so large that the voting time had to be extended by three and a half hours. It is claimed that 13 million people out of 15 million people voted in support of İmamoğlu.

İmamoğlu was first elected mayor in 2019. He was re-elected last year. After learning the results of the symbolic vote, he wrote on his X handle from prison, ‘The people of the country have given Erdoğan a message. Enough has happened, no more.’
