Israeli attack on Qatar, but Hamas leaders escaped
Hamas leaders narrowly escaped the Israeli attack on Qatar. Israel carried out at least 12 airstrikes on the area where Hamas leaders are staying in Doha on Tuesday (September 9). Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera confirmed the news.
Although the Hamas leaders were safe in the attack, the hotel where they were staying was damaged. Hamas leaders were discussing the terms of a ceasefire in Gaza. The attack targeted Khalil al-Haya, Zaher Jaberin and several other Hamas leaders.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he himself coordinated the attack. Meanwhile, Qatar called Tel Aviv’s move a terrorist act.
It is worth noting that the Israeli army, with the help of the internal security agency Shin Bet, attempted to assassinate top Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital yesterday.
The attack came days after Israeli army chief Yair Zamir threatened to kill Hamas leaders abroad. Hours after the threat, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced that the country had accepted the US-proposed Gaza ceasefire plan.
Qatar, on the other hand, called the attack a “cowardly act.” The White House has not yet issued a statement on the attack.
