Israel and Hamas agree to ceasefire deal.
Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization Hamas have finally agreed to a ceasefire deal. Both countries agreed to the ceasefire on Wednesday.
A reliable source told the BBC that the deal was brokered by the Qatari prime minister. He held separate meetings with Hamas and Israel. Later, they agreed to a ceasefire.
The ceasefire agreement states that millions of people in Gaza City and southern Gaza will return to their homes. During this period, 600 trucks carrying tents, food and medical supplies will enter Gaza daily through the Rafah crossing. In addition, 50 vehicles with fuel will enter.
A Reuters report said that there was no immediate comment from the Israeli government or Hamas. However, a Hamas official told the BBC that they had approved the draft prepared with the mediation of the United States, Qatar and Egypt.
Details of the three-phase plan have not yet been released. However, the report said that during the first six weeks of the ceasefire, 33 prisoners held by Hamas will be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons at regular intervals. Israeli forces will withdraw from populated areas of Gaza and displaced Palestinians will be allowed to return to their homes.
The second phase of talks will begin in two weeks. This will include the release of the remaining prisoners, the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops and the establishment of a lasting peace. The third and final phase will include the reconstruction of Gaza, which could take several years. The bodies of the remaining prisoners will be returned.
Earlier, Israeli media reported that the agreement will be officially announced on Thursday after receiving Hamas’s consent. It will take effect on Sunday. According to the report, the agreement is expected to take effect with the first round of prisoner releases.
