IRGC Pushes for New Leader After Khamenei’s Death

A tense standoff has erupted over who will take over power after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is pushing to quickly appoint a new leader, bypassing the constitutional process.
But according to Iran’s constitution, the Assembly of Experts is the body responsible for electing the supreme leader. It is claimed that their meeting cannot be convened due to the ongoing attacks. On that occasion, attempts are being made to complete the appointment outside the legal process.
Meanwhile, instability has emerged in the security and military structures following the joint US-Israeli attack. There are reports of breakdowns in some parts of the chain of command, disruptions in the exchange of orders and a lack of coordination. Sources also said that some military commanders and members have not reported to their respective bases. They are on high alert for fear that military installations could be targeted in the ongoing attacks.
The biggest concern is that new protests could spread across the country after daylight on Sunday. In such a situation, the Islamic Republic is under pressure from three sides: a leadership crisis, military instability, and public discontent.
