The incident created intense anger and condemnation on social media.
Matinur Islam Manik, cousin of the deceased Harun, said, “My brother borrowed 8 thousand taka from Morjina Khatun a month and a half ago. He used that money for his business. On Sunday morning, Morjina demanded 22 thousand taka as interest while bathing the body. When told that the matter would be settled after the burial, Morjina claimed that she would not allow the body to be buried unless the money was received. Harun’s family said, “We wanted to leave a cow at her house.” Later, we will bring the cow along with the cash.” But he did not agree to that either. Later, Marjina Khatun reduced it from Tk 22,000 to Tk 15,000. Then the family members collected Tk 15,000 and placed it on the body bed. Later, Marjina Khatun left with that money.
