Indonesia keen to deploy 20,000 troops to Gaza: President Subianto
Indonesia is keen to deploy 20,000 troops to ensure peace in Gaza. In his speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday (September 23), the country’s President Prabodh Subianto made the proposal to ensure the security of an independent Palestine alongside Israel.
“Today, the world is in the midst of conflict, injustice and growing uncertainty. Every day we witness suffering, genocide, violations of international law and human rights violations. If the Security Council makes this decision, we are ready to deploy 20,000 or more troops to help establish peace in Gaza or elsewhere,” Subianto said.
He added that Indonesia has sent 2,715 troops to the UN peacekeeping force until 2024, which currently brings us to sixth place in terms of sending peacekeepers. At that time, he also said that Indonesia is willing to send peacekeepers to Ukraine, Sudan or Libya if necessary.
It is worth noting that so far, 157 UN member states have recognized Palestine as a state. Which is 81 percent of the member states. At the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Canada, Australia, Portugal, the United Kingdom, France, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Andorra and Belgium officially recognized Palestine. As a result, the United States is the only country left among the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council.
