Husband sentenced to death in wife murder case

The tribunal has announced the death sentence of husband Md. Rubel in the wife murder case for dowry in Keraniganj, Dhaka. Judge Munshi Md. Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka’s Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal No. 4 announced the verdict today (December 01).
Tribunal bench assistant Rashedul Islam said that in addition to the death sentence, the accused has been fined Tk 1 lakh. The court has ordered the sale of the immovable/movable properties of the accused and the fine money to be given to the victim’s family. He was produced before the tribunal before the verdict was announced. After the verdict was announced, he was sent to jail with a warrant of arrest.
According to the details of the case, Rubel and Mosha. Riya Akter got married in 2019. Since their marriage, Rubel had been torturing Riya, demanding Tk 50,000 as dowry. On November 18, 2021, at around 9 am, Rubel went to his in-laws’ house in Panchgaon area of ​​South Keraniganj with his wife and children. He strangled her to death between 4 pm and 9 pm that day after not receiving the dowry money.
The next day, Riya’s father Motaleb filed a case in the incident. After filing the case, the police arrested Rubel. Rubel later confessed to the murder and gave a statement. After the investigation of the case, Zulfiqar Ali Sarkar, Sub-Inspector (SI) of South Keraniganj Police Station, filed a chargesheet in the court on March 31 of the following year. On January 26, 2023, charges were framed against the accused and the trial began. During the trial of the case, the court recorded the testimonies of 12 witnesses.
