Highway blocked after factory worker killed in truck crash
Workers of a factory named Golden Refit Garments Limited have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Bagher Bazar area of Sadar Upazila of Gazipur.
They started the protest at around 8 am today, Wednesday. Some time later, they blocked the highway. Passengers using the highway are suffering as the traffic on the highway is closed. They have set off on foot to their destination.
The protesting workers said that Golden Refit Garments Limited factory worker Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna (32) had requested leave from the APM Matiur Rahman authorities at around 9 pm yesterday as her child was sick. But he did not grant leave and sent Tamanna away after leaving the identity card given by the factory and she went home. While coming to the factory at 5:40 am today, Wednesday, she was hit by an auto-rickshaw and a truck at the moment of crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Later, the factory authorities made misleading comments about the body and claimed that the deceased worker did not belong to their factory. This caused confusion among the workers, who became angry. They blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in protest. They also demanded that the duty time be changed from 6 am to 7 pm, that leave be given between 5 pm and no duty be done after Iftar, 10 days off for Eid, that Eid bonus be paid by the 20th of this month, and that an adequate number of face punch machines be increased very quickly.
Meanwhile, Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent of Police AKM Zahirul Islam said, “If the workers are persuaded and removed from the highway, traffic will return to normal after 3 hours.”
