Highway blockade again demanding arrears.

The Dhaka-Tangail highway has been blocked in Chandra in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur over various demands, including arrears. Workers and officials of Mahmud Jeans factory have blocked the highway. This has caused extreme suffering to passengers and drivers traveling on the highway.

The aggrieved workers and officials have been blocking the highway since 9 am today, Thursday.

Workers and factory officials said that the aggrieved people have blocked the highway demanding one month’s arrears, service benefits and in some cases, six to nine months’ arrears of salaries and service benefits for factory officials. The factory authorities have been paying the arrears of salaries and service benefits to the workers and officials. The garment workers have taken to the streets in despair.

Regarding the highway blockade, Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Anwar Alam said that law enforcement officials are trying to normalize traffic on the highway by talking to the owners and aggrieved workers.
