Hasnat Abdullah: The People of Bangladesh Will Not Let Sheikh Hasina’s Dreams Come True.
Hasnat Abdullah has expressed strong opposition to the actions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her allies. Speaking at a councilor rally at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday, Hasnat declared that the people of Bangladesh would not allow Hasina and her associates’ “dreams” to materialize.
“Those who are conspiring in India will not succeed. The people of Bangladesh will not let the dreams of Sheikh Hasina and her friends come true,” Hasnat stated, referencing ongoing political tensions. She further criticized the government’s actions, claiming that fascist conspirators had been forced to flee due to the massive public resistance led by students and ordinary citizens.
During the rally, Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad voiced strong discontent over the cancellation of city and municipal councilor positions, while local Union Parishad leaders and bureaucrats, considered key supporters of the ruling Awami League, remained in office. He called for the formation of a committee to identify and retain councilors and public representatives who have actively opposed fascism and played a role in the anti-discrimination movement.
Nazrul Islam Khan, the president of the Bangladesh City Corporation Councilors Association, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing that councilors who had supported the public and protested against government oppression should be reinstated in their positions. He expressed frustration at the appointment of bureaucrats sympathetic to the ruling party in key municipal and city roles, noting the public’s growing anger over the lack of essential services.
Khan highlighted the long-standing oppression faced by councilors involved in the anti-fascist movement, saying, “We were elected by thousands of votes of the people, and we have suffered under tyranny for years. Now, we are demanding the reinstatement of those who stood by the people on the streets during the mass uprisings.”
The rally, which was attended by various prominent figures, including Saiful Islam Madhu, president of the Bangladesh Municipal Councilors’ Association, aimed to draw attention to the plight of city and municipal councilors who have been removed from office for opposing government policies. The participants emphasized their commitment to continuing the struggle for public rights and justice, urging the government to act swiftly to address these issues.
