Gun attack and arson at church in the United States, at least 4 killed
At least 4 people were killed in a gunman’s attack on a church in the United States. At least 8 were seriously injured. Al Jazeera reports.
The attack took place on Sunday (September 28) at the Jesus Christ Church of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, a suburb of Michigan.
The identity of the attacker has been released. The 40-year-old attacker has been named as Thomas Jacob Sanford.
Hundreds of people had gathered at the church for weekly prayers that day. At that time, a gunman drove a car and broke down the church door. As soon as he got out of the car, he started shooting indiscriminately, injuring several people.
At one point, the attacker set fire to the church building. As a result, part of the church building burned and collapsed.
Security forces arrived at the scene after receiving information. The gunman and police exchanged gunfire for a short time. The attacker died at the scene.
Two people were killed and eight others were injured in the shooting, officials said. Two more bodies were recovered from the burned-out church hours later. The church has not yet been cleared and there are fears there could be more bodies.
