Interim government preparing for elections: Chief Advisor.
The interim government is preparing for local elections along with the national elections. This was stated by Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
He said this in a meeting with European Investment Bank (EIB) Vice-President Nicola Beer on Wednesday.
During this, Professor Yunus discussed in detail the interim government’s plans for holding the next general elections and local government elections.
The Chief Advisor said, “The interim government is simultaneously preparing for local government elections. Because local government should be truly local and one government can be ensured.”
At this time, European Investment Bank Vice President Nicola Beer assured support in implementing important reforms undertaken by the government.
The press wing of the Chief Advisor’s office said that Dr. Yunus seeks the European Investment Bank’s support in combating corruption, energy transition and formulating a larger plan for the Sundarbans mangrove forest and the surrounding area and river system. He seeks assistance in building facilities at Chittagong Port and in water management in the northern region for the development of the people of eastern Bangladesh.
The Chief Advisor said, ‘The development of eastern Bangladesh will benefit eastern India and Myanmar.’
At this time, Nicola Beer said, ‘We have come at a very challenging time. We support the interim government and the government’s reform agenda. The EU has the technical expertise to assist in these areas. It is also important to make it visible that the interim government of Bangladesh is not just working but also implementing.’
The meeting was attended by the Special Envoy of the Chief Advisor Lutfe Siddiqui, Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Ashiq Mahmud Chowdhury, Senior Secretary for SDGs Lamia Morshed, Secretary of the Economic Relations Division Shahriar Quader Siddiqui, EU Ambassador Michael Miller, among others.
Incidentally, the 12th National Parliament elections were held on January 7 last year during the Awami League regime. But facing the onslaught of student protests over quota reforms in government jobs, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country for India on August 5 last year. This led to the collapse of the Awami League’s 15-year rule. Then an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
