Government employee who pelted rickshaw puller with shoe got fired
The government has temporarily suspended Zahid Hasan, a social service officer in Rajshahi’s Paba Upazila, for hitting a rickshaw puller with a shoe. He was suspended on Monday in a notification issued by the Administration-5 (Administration and Discipline) Branch of the Ministry of Social Welfare.
The notification signed by Secretary Dr. Md. Mohiuddin on the orders of the President said that the video of the rickshaw puller being mercilessly beaten has gone viral on social media and the matter has been reported in the media. Such behavior has severely tarnished the image of the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Department of Social Welfare. As a government employee, such behavior is indecent, inconsistent, against service discipline and a punishable offense. Therefore, he has been suspended as per the Government Service Act and the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules. Zahid Hasan will be entitled to food allowance as per the rules. The notification also mentioned that this order will come into effect immediately in the public interest.
Earlier, CCTV footage of the rickshaw puller being beaten with shoes on Friday went viral on social media. It shows that in front of the quarters Zahid Hasan beat a rickshaw puller by taking off his shoes. Later, he took out a stick from the back of a private car and hit the rickshaw puller and the rickshaw. He also abused him in obscene language.
The next day, Saturday, Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhtar ordered an investigation in a letter to the Deputy Director of the District Office of the Department of Social Services, Monira Khatun, and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of the Paba, Arafat Aman Aziz. They were asked to submit a report within the next seven working days. The ministry suspended Zahid Hasan before the investigation was completed.
Zahid took a two-day leave until Monday after the video went viral. Earlier, on Sunday, he wrote a status on his Facebook ID, “Has such an incident never happened in anyone else’s life? I have done wrong. But did I deserve such a big punishment?” He also apologized in the post, expressing remorse.
