Generation Z protests in Peru leave one dead and more than 100 injured

One person was killed and more than 100 others injured in violent anti-government protests led by the ‘Generation Z’ in Peru. The Peruvian government on Saturday (October 18) dismissed the police chief of the capital Lima following the violent protests.
General Enrique Felipe Monroy has been suspended pending the results of an investigation into last Wednesday’s protests, organized by the youth organization Generation Z. One protester was killed by police fire during the violent protests. Monroy had been Lima’s police chief since January 2024.
National Police Commander Oscar Areola, who is in charge of the Interior Ministry, announced the dismissal of Monroy and replaced him with General Manuel Vidarte.
Lima has been rocked by weeks of protests over corruption and a failure to tackle a wave of contract killings and extortion. Last week, Congress impeached the country’s deeply unpopular former president, Dina Boluarte, for failing to tackle violent crime. Parliament Speaker José Jeri will serve as interim president until a new president is elected in elections to be held in April.
