Gaza war must end immediately: Trump
US President Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly, “Israel’s war in Gaza must end immediately.” At the same time, he described the decision of some Western countries to recognize a Palestinian state as a kind of “reward” for Hamas.
“We must end the war in Gaza now,” Trump said in a speech to world leaders in New York on Tuesday. He also said that he was deeply involved in ensuring a ceasefire.
Calling for the release of prisoners held in Gaza, Trump said, “We have to get it done. We have to negotiate for peace. We have to get the hostages back. We want everyone, especially the 20 who have a chance of being alive.”
In a speech to the UN, Trump said, “Those who are for peace must unite to demand the release of the prisoners.”
Trump met with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session on the situation in Gaza.
After the meeting, Turkish President Erdogan said, “It was a very productive meeting and a joint statement will be issued.”
Trump said, “Some members of this organization are trying to provoke conflict by unilaterally recognizing a Palestinian state. This would be a huge reward for the Hamas terrorists.”
However, at a meeting held last Sunday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres took a different position, saying, “A state for the Palestinians is not a reward, but their right.”
Sultan Barakat, a professor at Hamad bin Khalifa University in Qatar, commented, “Although Trump called for an end to the fighting, he did not say anything about how it would be done.”
