Garment factories to declare one-day holiday on Khaleda Zia’s death
A general holiday has been declared for all garment factories in the country tomorrow, Wednesday, following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The BGMEA, an organization of ready-made garment manufacturers and exporters, has taken this decision in line with the government’s announcement of three days of state mourning and one-day holiday.
This information was given in a press release signed by BGMEA Acting Secretary Major Md. Saiful Islam (Retd.) on Tuesday (December 30) afternoon. The release said that three-time former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at around 6 am today (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Rajiun). On this occasion, the government has declared three days of state mourning and one-day general holiday.
Agreeing with the government’s decision, I specially request all garment factories affiliated with BGMEA to declare one-day general holiday tomorrow, Wednesday. Meanwhile, BGMEA has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. This information was given in a condolence message sent by the BGMEA today (December 30).
Expressing deep grief over the death of Khaleda Zia, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said in a statement, “We, the entire garment industry family, are deeply saddened and shocked by the death of Begum Khaleda Zia. The country has lost a guardian and a timeless patriotic leader. This irreplaceable void in national life cannot be filled. In particular, her sincerity and timely and courageous decisions in the global expansion of the ready-made garment industry will forever be a milestone in the progress of our industry. Her economic philosophy and career will remain immortal in the history of the country’s industry and trade. Begum Khaleda Zia played a pioneering role in establishing the economy of Bangladesh on a strong foundation and paving the way for modern industrialization. In the early 1990s, under the strong leadership of her government, Bangladesh ushered in a full-fledged free market economy, which provided untapped opportunities for development to the private sector.”
