Gang rape after drugging, 4 university students arrested

The Ashulia police have arrested 3 students, including the brother of VP Mridul Dewan of a private university under Ashulia police station in Savar, on charges of inviting a university student on the pretext of a picnic, drugging her, holding her hostage and extorting money after recording a video. The arrested are second-year law students of the university Delwar Bhuiyan, Tajul Islam Taj, senior Antu Dewan and outsider Shraban Saha.
According to police information, Antu Dewan is the cousin of the newly elected VP of the university, Yasin Al Mridul Dewan. He is involved in terror and terrorism in the university and is exclusively involved in harassing female students. Since he is the VP’s brother, no one dared to file a complaint against him. Earlier, on Wednesday (December 3), a first-year law student of Savar Public University, the victim, filed a case against four people at Ashulia police station.
According to the case report, on the morning of April 7, the victim was taken to the Fulertek area of ​​Ashulia on the pretext of taking her to a picnic. On the way, the victim fell unconscious after consuming ‘Major’ soft drinks and anaesthetic. When she regained consciousness around 5 pm that day, she found herself at the Fulertek student assembly and realised that she had been forcibly sexually assaulted. Later, when she started screaming, the accused threatened to spread the rape video and obscene pictures on social media and burn her face with acid.
Since the incident, they have been holding her hostage by threatening to make the rape video viral and extorting a total of Tk 96,000 from the victim at various stages. The victim told the police that when she went to the campus yesterday (December 3) morning, the accused again pressured her for physical intercourse. Later, she went home and informed her family members about the matter.
She said that on the morning of November 6, the accused pressured her for the second time to have physical intercourse with Antu Dewan. When she did not agree to their proposal, they used obscene language and tried to drag the victim to Antu Dewan by slapping her indiscriminately. At this time, they again forced the victim to drink a poisonous intoxicating drink in a bottle. After the incident, she escaped and somehow entered the campus in an unwell state and became seriously ill and unconscious. Later, her classmates and teachers admitted her to the Gonoshasthaya Samaj-based Medical Center. When her condition deteriorated, she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. There she underwent treatment for 5 days. When the victim’s relatives filed a written complaint with the university administration, the accused further assaulted her. After returning to the campus after treatment, on November 26 at around 12 noon, when she went to the academic room of the law department of the public university, the accused immediately closed the door, detained the victim, pressured her to withdraw the written complaint filed with the university, and beat her up. Later, around 3 pm, they released her on bail.
He said, despite filing a complaint with the university administration and the department head on November 27, the university administration did not take any action against the accused for 7 days, so the victim student was forced to file a case with Ashulia police station yesterday for security reasons.
In this regard, Ashulia police station OC Abdul Hannan said, a case has been filed regarding these incidents that occurred since April 3. Since the university did not take any action even after filing the complaint, the student came to the police station with her family members and filed a case mentioning the names of 4 people. The police took quick action in this incident and arrested four accused from the surrounding area in just 17 hours after conducting a raid all night.
This Thursday morning, the OC told us that the accused are being questioned. Efforts are being made to find out whether the university administration or VP Yasin Al Mridul Dewan was involved in this incident.
He also said that out of the four arrested, three are university students and one is an external associate.
