Former Joypurhat mayor arrested again in student shooting case
This time, the police have arrested Mostafizur Rahman Mostaq (48), the joint general secretary of Joypurhat district Awami League and former mayor of Joypurhat Municipality, in the case of a student who was shot.
On Sunday night, the district detectives and the police arrested him in a joint operation from the main gate of the 250-bed General Hospital in Joypurhat. Mostaq is the son of Abdul Hafiz, a contractor in Arafat Nagar Mahala in Joypurhat city.
According to the relevant case and police sources, on August 4 last year, the students and the public against discrimination were holding a peaceful procession demanding the fall of the Awami government. When the procession reached the Joypurhat Central Mosque premises, Awami terrorists started throwing cocktails and hand grenades and started approaching the procession. At that time, former chairman of the Sadar Upazila Parishad Hasanuzzaman (Mithu) and former Awami League president Golam Mostafa attacked the procession with domestic and sharp weapons on the orders of the latter.
At one stage, influenced by Awami League leaders AHM Kausaruzzaman Sagar and Enamul Haque, others forcibly snatched guns from the police and started shooting at the procession with the intention of killing. At one stage, student Shafi Sarkar was shot among the numerous casualties from the bullets fired from their guns. At that time, he was shot above the eye and lost consciousness.
The students and the public immediately admitted him to the Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital for treatment. Later, after recovering from treatment, he filed a case with the Joypurhat Police Station. After the police investigation, they arrested Joypurhat Municipality Mayor Mostafizur Rahman Mostaq on Sunday night.
The plaintiff in the case, Shafi Sarkar, was an HSC examinee of Joypurhat Shaheed Zia College in 2025 and the son of Nasir Sarkar of Pathuria village in Dogachi union of Sadar upazila.
Joypurhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Alam Siddique said that former Joypurhat mayor Mostafizur Rahman Mostaq has been arrested in a case filed by student Shafi Sarkar, who was shot.
It is worth noting that Mayor Mostafizur Rahman Mostaq was arrested from Dhaka Airport on December 31 last year and sent to Joypurhat District Jail. On Sunday, Chief Judicial Magistrate Shyam Sundar Roy released him from the court, but the police arrested him again after 82 days.
