Former Chief Justice Khairul Haque arrested

Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque has been arrested. The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested him from a house in Dhanmondi in the capital on Thursday (July 24) morning. There are 3 cases against Khairul Haque in Dhaka and Narayanganj. A case was filed against him at Shahbagh Police Station on August 28, 2024, on charges of corruption and forgery of verdicts. Supreme Court lawyer Mujahidul Islam Shaheen filed the case. Another case was filed at Fatulla Police Station in Narayanganj on August 25 of the same year. The case was filed by Abdul Bari Bhuiyan, former president of the Narayanganj District Bar Association and general secretary of Fatulla Police Station BNP, over the verdict declaring the caretaker government system unconstitutional 13 years ago. Recently, the Nationalist Lawyers Forum held a press conference demanding the arrest and trial of former Chief Justice Khairul Haque. The organization demanded that he be brought to justice, calling him the main architect of the destruction of the country’s judiciary and democracy. Khairul Haque was appointed as the country’s 19th Chief Justice on September 27, 2010. He retired on May 17 the following year.
