    Foreign currency worth half a crore taka seized in vegetable carton.

    A passenger has been detained at the Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport with foreign currency worth nearly half a crore taka.

    The passenger was detained at Gate 7 of the International Departures of the terminal building on Tuesday evening with the help of a security guard based on confidential information.

    It is learnt that the passenger tried to smuggle the foreign currency by hiding it in vegetables in his luggage.

    According to airport sources, the passenger, named Shakib Newaz of Lohagara, Chittagong, was scheduled to fly to Dubai on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-147.

    His vegetable carton contained 140,000 Saudi riyals (45,078,000 taka at 32.70 taka per riyal), 575 Omani riyals (178,250 taka at 310 taka per riyal) and 9,200 UAE dirhams (32.90 taka at 32,02,680 taka per dirham).

    Which is equivalent to 50,058,930 taka in Bangladeshi taka and 42,158 US dollars. The recovered foreign currency has been handed over to the airport customs.

    A criminal case is under process against Shakib in this incident, said Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, public relations officer of Shah Amanat International Airport.
