Five sentenced to life imprisonment in Mymensingh’s Habib murder case
A court in Haluaghat, Mymensingh has sentenced five people to life imprisonment in the murder case of farmer Habibur Rahman. This Sunday (April 12) afternoon, Additional Sessions Judge Court-1 Justice Md. Shamsuddin announced the verdict. In the verdict, Shukkur Ali, Harez Ali, Amir Ali, Jamir Ali and Hatem Ali of Mokamia village in Haluaghat upazila have been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of one lakh taka each and another one year in prison in default.
According to the details of the case, farmer Ahmed Ali of Mokamia village in Haluaghat upazila had a dispute with farmer Shukkur Ali of the same village over the land. As a result, on the afternoon of October 14, 2012, 20 to 25 people led by Shukkur Ali, Amir Ali and Jamir Ali entered the land occupied by Ahmad Ali’s wife Nurunnahar with country-made weapons including machetes, sticks and forcibly cut the paddy.
When Nurunnahar and her family members came forward to stop them, the accused attacked them indiscriminately. Nurunnahar, her grandmother Sufia Khatun, maternal uncle Habibur Rahman and Khalilur Rahman were injured. At that time, the accused forced their way into Nurunnahar’s house, caused extensive vandalism and looted cash from the house. Later, the family members rescued them and admitted them to Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex.
In this incident, Nurunnahar filed a case of attempt to murder against Shukkur Ali, Harez Ali, Amir Ali, Jamir Ali and Hatem Ali. Habibur Rahman died while undergoing treatment 10 to 12 days after the case was filed. After the police investigation, they filed a chargesheet in the murder case. After a long hearing, the court announced the verdict on Sunday afternoon.
