Five killed in shooting in Thailand, attacker commits suicide

At least five people were killed in a shooting at a market in the Thai capital Bangkok on Monday (July 28). The attacker later committed suicide, Thai police said in a statement.Charin Gopat, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, told Reuters that the gunman was among the dead, who then committed suicide after opening fire. Police said in a statement that they were investigating the identity of the man and the motive for the incident. All five of the people killed in the shooting were security guards at the market. No tourists or other people were killed or injured in the shooting. The market was said to have mainly sold agricultural products. Video footage shared by police shows a suspect wearing a white hat and a backpack slung across his chest walking through a parking lot at the market. Gun violence and gun ownership are not uncommon in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14-year-old suspect used a handgun to kill two people and injure five others at a luxury mall in central Bangkok. A year earlier, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun and knife attack at a nursery in eastern Thailand.
