    First Woman Governor of Central Bank of Syria: Maysa Sabrin

    Maysa Sabrin has been sworn in as the first woman governor of the Central Bank of Syria. She broke the history of the past 70 years. Al Jazeera News.

    The new Syrian ruler has named Maysa Sabrin as the governor. Earlier, she was serving as the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Syria.

    This is the first time in the history of the Syrian Republic that a lady has assumed the post of central bank governor,” an official described it, saying that “a precedent” was set for Syrian banking.

    Maysa Sabrin, a public accountant, holding a master’s degree in accounting from Damascus University, represented the central bank as a member of the board of directors of the Damascus Securities Exchange since December 2018. According to the website of the bank, she served as deputy governor and head of the bank’s office control department.

    Maysa Sabrin replaced Governor Mohammad Issam Hazim, who was appointed by then-President Bashar al-Assad in 2021.

    Sabrin is reportedly the second woman in Syria to be appointed by the new Syrian administration, led by de facto leader Ahmed al-Shara.

    Earlier this month, Aisha al-Dibas was appointed head of the Women’s Affairs Office under the Syrian interim government.
