Fire at biscuit factory in Greece, 5 dead

Five people have been killed and one is missing after an explosion and fire at a biscuit factory near Trikala, Greece. A Greek community newspaper published in Melbourne, Australia, reported on Tuesday (January 27) that the fire broke out after a sudden explosion at the factory called ‘Violanta’ in the early hours of Monday. Workers working the night shift were inside at the time.
Initially, the bodies of four workers were recovered. Later, another body was found under the rubble. The report mentioned that all the deceased were factory workers and most of them were women. Meanwhile, Greece’s largest labor union, GSEE, has demanded a full investigation into the incident.
It was also reported that seven people were injured in the incident, including a firefighter. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Trikala, Greece. According to local health authorities, some of them are suffering from smoke inhalation.
The Greek fire service said it took a long time to put out the fire and that heavy equipment was needed for the rescue operation. The exact cause of the explosion is not yet known, but initial investigations are looking into the possibility of a gas leak or mechanical failure.
