Fined 6.5 lakh taka for posting a woman’s picture without permission

A man posted a picture and video clip of a woman on social media without permission. As a result, he had to pay a fine of 20 thousand dirhams (about 6.5 lakh taka in Bangladeshi currency).
This incident took place in the United Arab Emirates.
According to a report in Khaleej Times on Sunday (October 19), the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court issued this ruling on the woman’s online privacy violation.
The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Claims Court issued this ruling last Thursday (October 16).
According to court documents, the accused posted the woman’s picture and video clip on a social media platform. The woman filed a case in the court alleging that it caused her mental distress as well as damage to her social reputation.
Khaleej Times says that the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court convicted the man on the same charge in March. Later, the appeal court also upheld the verdict. The verdict became final as the accused did not appeal.
In its ruling, the court said that the violation of privacy is a wrongful act that has caused both moral and psychological harm to the woman. If someone intentionally or unintentionally causes harm to another, he is obliged to compensate the injured person.
The court said that although the plaintiff claimed 50,000 dirhams in compensation for the loss of his honor and reputation, the evidence did not indicate any significant financial loss or long-term social impact. The court considered that 20,000 dirhams was sufficient as compensation for mental anguish, anxiety and loss of reputation.
