Feni receives highest rainfall of the season, Muhuri river bank breaks, shops submerged
Feni has received a record 233 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours, which is the highest rainfall record in a single day in the current monsoon season. Feni Meteorological Office In-charge Md. Mojibur Rahman confirmed that this rainfall was recorded from 9 am on Monday (July 7) to 9 am on Tuesday (July 8). Due to this continuous heavy rain, various places including Rampur Shaheen Academy area, Pathanbari, Nazir Road, Petrobangla Road, etc. in Feni city have been severely waterlogged. The common people are stuck in knee-deep water. The suffering of office-goers, school-students and hard-working laborers was especially noticeable. Meanwhile, due to continuous rain, two shops have been submerged in the riverbed after the Muhuri river bank broke in the Sreepur Road area of Fulgazi upazila. The accident occurred when the river bank suddenly collapsed in the early morning. Local residents said that due to illegal sand mining, the river bank in this area has collapsed several times and shops and houses have been submerged in the river. Feni Water Development Board Sub-Divisional Engineer Md. Abul Kashem said that the water level of the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers bordering the district has increased. However, it is still below the danger level. He said, “Landslides have been seen in some areas of the Muhuri river. Two shops have collapsed and are submerged in the river. We are monitoring the situation and are preparing to take necessary measures.”
