Female-led movies are declining.
Female-led movies have always been commercially successful. However, gender inequality remains in this industry. Most of the stories are male-driven. Women are poorly represented in most movies; but female characters are an essential part of movies.
Until the nineties, the number of female-led movies was significant. In the present era, those concerned are claiming that female characters are neglected in commercial movies. Female-led movies include Subhash Dutt’s ‘Arunodayer Agnisakshi’, Humayun Ahmed’s ‘Aguner Parashmani’, renowned filmmaker Amjad Hossain’s ‘Nayanmani’, ‘Golapi Ekhon Trene’, ‘Sundari’, ‘Bhat De’, ‘Dui Paisaar Alta’, ‘Sakhinar Yuddha’, ‘Golapi Ekhon Dhakaay’, ‘Golapi Ekhon Bilete’. Many more movies have been made based on women, which still have a place in the hearts of the audience. Still, directors are a little worried about making women-oriented films due to commercial considerations. If we take films like ‘Sareng Bou’, ‘Shasti’, ‘Subha’, ‘Suryakanya’, ‘Tin Kanya’, ‘Hajar Basar Dhar’, ‘Fulshya’, ‘Pokamakader Gharbasti’, ‘Alor Micil’, ‘Megher Anok Rang’, ‘Ammajan’, ‘Dhar’, ‘Veder Meye Josna’, ‘Char Sateener Ghar’, ‘Megher Kole Rod’, ‘Meghla Akash’, ‘Abujh Bou’, ‘Putr Ekhon Paisawala’, ‘Poush Masare Pirit’ as examples, film experts do not think there is any reason to be afraid here. Apart from this, ‘Jawbati Kanyar Mon’, ‘Devi’, ‘Vishwasundari’, ‘Na Dorai’ etc. have been made in the past few years. Apart from this, there are feminist films like ‘Suryadighal Bari’, ‘Biraj Bou’, ‘Palabi Kothay’, ‘Nirantor’, ‘Guerilla’, ‘Mayabati’, ‘Sutpar Thikana’. Yet now films are being made ignoring women.
On this issue, popular actor Afran Nisho said, ‘In our country, there are few works on women-centric stories and even if there are, many people are less interested in them. Not only that, directors also do not do them with much interest. I think this is not right. Just as men have emotions, problems or loves, women also have them. Why are there no works on screen about them? I think such works are important and if I have any opportunity to be associated with such works, I will definitely be there.’ Actress Zakia Bari Mom said, ‘If I speak for myself, the stories in the films I work in are male-centric. Most of them are male-centric. The presence and importance of female characters here are less. There may be various reasons for this. However, I want a change in this place. Let there be female-led stories in movies. Some web series, that is what is happening in movies now. Women are a big force, there is no room to deny it at this time. There are so many colors in women’s lives, their socio-economic reality – these can also be worked on.’
In this context, Kazi Hayat said, ‘Movies with female-led characters were not made in Dhallywood in that way. Because women’s movement and work in society were limited. Women’s participation in various activities of society was also less. Earlier, women were thought of only as housewives. They would be confined within four walls – such was the mentality. Now, this situation has changed with the evolution of time. Women’s representation is increasing in various sectors. Women’s position is becoming stronger. So now it is time to make women-led movies.’ On the subject, renowned actress Suchanda said, ‘Women have always been neglected in our society. Making movies about women’s joys and deprivations is properly done by women. It is sad but true that the participation of women directors in our film industry is low.
Babita said, “When I make films as a woman, I give priority to women. Due to the lack of education, research and respect for directors, women-led films are not being made in this way anymore. In fact, women and men complement each other – until this idea is established in the country and society, women will remain neglected.” Jaya Ahsan has acted in several women-led films. She said, “The female body in our films was mostly ambiguous. It is not that some good women-led works have not been done. There have been; but they are very few in number. Women-led films are being made around the world; but despite that, we see most of the films are male-led. The main reason for this may be the thinking of the directors. Many people assume that films with female-led characters will not be received by the audience in that way, or will not be commercially successful. This idea has not always been proven to be true. It’s time to think a little differently about making women-led films.’ Poppy said, ‘A woman rarely gets time to think for herself. She has to think about every member of her family. Even before going to bed at night, her family members wake up in the morning and plan what they will eat before going to bed. All the great successes in the world have been achieved by men and women together. So there is no reason to belittle or belittle women. Those who watch are mentally ill.’
