February elections will usher in a new era of democracy: Chief Advisor
Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus met with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. During the meeting, the Chief Advisor said that the February elections will usher in a new era for democracy.
The mayor met with the Chief Advisor at the hotel where he is staying in New York on Tuesday (September 23), a message from the Chief Advisor’s press wing said.
The meeting discussed the upcoming national elections, the interim government’s reform efforts, the role of social business in sports and the Olympics, and the global refugee crisis—especially the Rohingya humanitarian crisis.
Regarding the Olympics, the Chief Advisor noted that he played a key role in transforming the Paris 2024 Olympics into one of the world’s largest social business events. He stressed that all future Olympics, especially the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics, must be carbon neutral.
The Chief Advisor said that Bangladesh is moving forward on the path of democratic transformation and the next general elections will be held in the first half of February next year.
He also said that the upcoming February elections will be fundamental elections, which will usher in a new era for the country’s democracy.
Mayor Hidalgo expressed full confidence in Professor Yunus’ leadership during this crisis. “I applaud your leadership. You have done a remarkable job,” he said.
Both leaders stressed the urgent need to increase funding for humanitarian assistance for the more than one million Rohingya living in the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
Mayor Hidalgo specifically called for improving the quality of life in refugee camps worldwide and expressed hope that the Rohingya will one day be able to return to their homeland, Myanmar, in safety and dignity.
At the same time, the Chief Advisor said that the United Nations is organizing a major international conference on the Rohingya crisis next week, which aims to refocus global attention on one of the most serious refugee situations in recent decades.
He also said that he has invited Mayor Hidalgo to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time. Lamia Morshed, Senior Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh and SDG Coordinator, was also present at the meeting.
