Father’s body kept for 36 hours

Due to a property dispute between heirs, the body of a man was kept for about 36 hours before being buried in Hathazari, Chittagong. The incident took place on Sunday (December 21) in Phatika village, ward number 6 of the municipality. The deceased has been identified as Md. Sekandar Mia (70). He was married twice during his lifetime. However, after divorcing his first wife, he married for the second time. He had five children in his first marriage and three children in his second marriage. It has been alleged that this incident took place in protest against the deprivation of the children of his first marriage from the property of the children of his second marriage before his death.
Sekandar Mia was a ship captain during his lifetime. His village is Badamtol in Mekhal Union of the upazila, but for many years he has been living in his own building (Nakshu Villa) near the house of former upazila chairman Mahabubul Alam in Phatika village, ward number 6 of the municipality. Earlier, on Saturday (December 20), at around 5 am, Sekander Mia died. It is learnt that upon hearing the news of his father’s death, the children of his first wife gathered at Nakshu Villa in Fatika village of the municipality and demanded their share of their father’s property through inheritance and prevented the burial of his father’s body.
Ayesha Akhtar, the eldest daughter of Sekander Mia’s first house, expressed her anger and told media personnel, “We are the children of the first house. We will not allow our father’s body to be buried until our share of the property is explained.” The incident of preventing the burial of her father’s body for property spread on social media Facebook in a short time and when it went viral, it created widespread discussion and criticism.
Meanwhile, when the matter came to the attention of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin, he intervened and informed the police station. Later, with the intervention of the UNO and the police station, they withdrew their announcement, assuring that the children of the first house would get their share of the property. Later, after about 36 hours, the old man’s burial was completed after Maghrib prayers yesterday, Sunday, Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Md. Jalal Uddin confirmed.
