Father beaten to death for protesting harassment of daughter in Matlab
A father was beaten to death for protesting harassment of his daughter in Matlab Uttar Upazila of Chandpur. The incident took place in Harina village of Durgapur Union of the upazila. The deceased has been identified as Md. Zakir Hossain Miyaji (45). He died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday (March 8).
According to local sources, Zakir Hossain’s daughter studied in a local school. Every day, some youths used to harass her on her way to and from school. The accused include Fayom Miyaji, son of Nasir Hossain Miyaji of Nishchintapur village, Md. Safin, son of Ainul Kabir Fatik, Rifat Bepari, son of Mizan Bepari of Nawdona village, and Riyad Shikder, son of Mohsin Shikder, along with 10 to 15 others.
Zakir Hossain has complained to the school principal about the incident. Enraged by this, the accused attacked him in Nishchintapur Bazar on the evening of February 23. He was beaten and seriously injured. Later, he was taken to Matlab Uttar Upazila Health Complex. When his condition deteriorated there, he was sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital. From there, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. After being under treatment for 13 consecutive days, he died at around 5 am yesterday. Zakir Hossain’s younger brother Hossain Miyaji has filed a case in the Chandpur court in this regard.
The daughter of the deceased said, “Some boys often harassed me while going to school. When I informed my father about the matter, he complained to the school. As a result, my father was beaten to death.” The wife of the deceased said, “My husband was a farmer. When he protested against the harassment of his daughter, he was brutally killed. I have small children, how will I live with them now? I want proper justice for the murder of my husband.”
In this regard, the principal of Nishchintapur High School, Md. Arifulla said, “I don’t know anything about this. No one informed me about this.” Matlab North Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Kamrul Hasan said, Zakir Hossain Miyaji was admitted to the hospital with injuries. He later died while undergoing treatment. Preparations are underway to file a new murder case in this incident. Police have launched a drive to arrest those involved.
