Farmer’s body found next to irrigation pump in Shailkupa
Police have recovered the body of a farmer named Sohag Fakir (25) from next to an irrigation pump in a field in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah. His body was recovered from the Baraipara field of the upazila around 6 pm yesterday, Sunday (December 14). The deceased Sohag Fakir is the son of Monirul Islam Fakir of Habibpur Madhyapara village of Shailkupa municipality.
Police and farmers of Baraipara village said that they found Sohag’s body next to an irrigation pump in the Baraipara field around 3 pm. They saw injury marks on his lower body and skin peeling off. They believe that he may have died due to electrocution from the irrigation pump house. However, the body was found 50/60 yards away from the irrigation pump, where there were no electric wires or poles. They claim that Ujjal Hossain, who operates the irrigation pump, informed the farmers and the deceased’s family members in the field around noon that farmer Sohag had died of electrocution. However, since then, Ujjal has not returned to the irrigation pump or said anything about how the body fell away from the pump.
However, when he went to Ujjal Hossain’s house to inquire about this, he could not be found. Despite repeated attempts to contact his mobile number, it was found switched off. Monirul Fakir, the father of the deceased Sohag, said that he had gone to the field with his son to plant onions around 8 am. After a while, the son said that he was not feeling well and was feeling sick. When the son did not return to the field, he thought that he had gone home. Then, when he returned home, he was informed that his son had died. He came to know through local farmers that his son had taken gastric medicine and had gone to the irrigation pump to use the toilet.
In this regard, Humayun Kabir Mollah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shailkupa Police Station, said that after receiving the news, the scene was inspected. It is initially believed that the farmer died of electrocution. After initial investigation, the body has been sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for autopsy. An investigation into the incident has been launched, he said.
