    UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Falkar Turk is in Dhaka

    Falkar Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has arrived in Dhaka on a two-day visit.

    He arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday night. Turk was welcomed there by Toufiq Hasan, Director General and Spokesperson of the United Nations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Tauhid Hossain will hold a separate meeting with Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul and Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed. Falker Turk is also scheduled to meet with Army Chief General Walker-Uz-Zaman. Besides, Falker Turk will also give a speech at Dhaka University, where he will meet the students involved in the movement to overthrow the government. He is also scheduled to meet with various UN agencies and members of the diplomatic mission in Bangladesh.

    Tomorrow, Wednesday, the High Commissioner will hold a press conference in Dhaka at 5:30 pm at the end of his mission.

    This visit of the UN human rights chief is very important after Bangladesh’s change of status on August 5. Human rights, security and election issues will be important in this visit. Human rights issues include investigations by UN fact-finding missions. The interim government seeks UN support in security and electoral reform. The United Nations is also ready to help. But how cooperation can be in any format is supposed to be presented at the discussion table during Turk’s visit to Dhaka.

    According to diplomatic sources, Dhaka is seeking cash assistance from the United Nations on human rights, security and election issues. In that case, the UN Human Rights Organization wants a specific recommendation on the sectors in which this cash assistance will be spent and how it will be spent. Not only that, there should be a consensus of the political arena of Bangladesh on those recommendations.

    A diplomat in Dhaka said that many issues will be discussed during Turk’s visit, but at the end of the visit, he can hold a meeting with the concerned parties of the interim government on the issue of political consensus. The opening of the United Nations Human Rights Office in Dhaka may also be discussed during Turk’s visit.
